This is the story of Albert Schreiner, my great-grandfather. Born in Aglasterhausen, near Stuttgart on 7 August 1892, Albert was a metalworker and active socialist before going to the Western Front in 1914. In 1918 he returned to Stuttgart, where he became a senior member of the Communist Party and led a revolution. With the rise of National Socialism, Albert fled Germany to Paris in 1933, fought in the Spanish civil war and escaped to America in 1941. He returned to Germany after WWII and lived in East Germany until his death in 1979.

I am self-publishing a graphic novel telling the story of this family member and his place at the forefront of sweeping political changes in Germany and Europe across the first-half of the twentieth century.

The project was successfully funded via Kickstarter to finance a research trip to museums in Berlin and Stuttgart, which took place earlier this year. Work is underway on the novel and it will hopefully be published in 2021.
